A PERSONAL UPDATE FROM DR. PHILLIPS

For the last 34 years, one of the greatest parts of my life has been taking care of patients. Many of you are no longer simply patients—you are friends, families I have treated across generations, and people I have shared a great deal of life with.

Over the past year, however, my own health has required more and more attention.

I have a hereditary kidney disease called ADTKD-UMOD, which causes progressive loss of kidney function. I am undergoing continued testing and monitoring as we try to determine how quickly that progression is occurring and when kidney replacement may become necessary.

I have always tried to be very transparent with my patients, so I want to be specific: based on what we know today, I could potentially need a kidney transplant in as little as approximately 18 months, or it could still be several years away. We simply do not know yet. Every new round of testing gives us a little more clarity and allows us to adjust that timeline.

Because of that uncertainty, the amount of medical testing I am undergoing, and the need to protect my health, my medical situation has reached the point where I need to step away from face-to-face clinical care for at least the next 60 days.

For now, I will not be scheduling in-person appointments, and there will not be a waiting list or future in-person appointments scheduled for me after the 60-day period.

That does not mean I am disappearing.

I will continue to be involved with Redlands Chiropractic and work with our doctors and leadership team. I am also developing an online practice, and once that is fully set up, I may be available to patients through Zoom and other online options. Those details are still being developed, so for now I do not want to promise a specific type or amount of online availability.

This is a significant adjustment for me because I genuinely love treating patients. After 34 years, the relationships and the opportunity to help people are still some of the best parts of what I do. But right now, my health requires me to change how I practice while I learn more about what the next several years are going to look like.

It also gives me the opportunity to spend more time with my family and begin designing the next chapter of my clinical life rather than waiting until my health eventually makes that decision for me.

For those who would like to follow my kidney journey, receive updates, stay connected with me, or learn about my online practice as it develops, I have created a place specifically for that.
